Foundational Drawing Class
September 19 - December 5, 2025, every Friday, 6-9pm
Gateway is offering a free 12-week Foundational Drawing Class for aspiring artists that desire to honor God with their gifts and grow in their craft. The class will teach basic drawing techniques, and how to create art as an expression of prayer and worship.
Class Components
Classroom Teachings — The first hour on Friday nights will be class time in the basement of Gateway. There will be teaching on the technicalities of black and white pencil line drawing, which is the foundation for all other fine art mediums. The instruction will be hands-on, guiding students through the drawing process and incorporating an awareness of God’s heart for excellence through the process. The teachings of each class session will build off of each other, so it is important not to miss classes if possible. We recommend that you only register for this class if you are able to consistently commit to the schedule and complete homework assignments.
Homework Assignments — In order to develop a true foundation of drawing skill, there will be small homework assignments given. Be prepared to bring your sketchbook home to complete the projects started in class.
Prayer Room — The last two hours of Friday nights will be spent in Gateway’s Prayer Room during the Arts Watch. In contrast to the skill-building class time, there will be creative prompts given to encourage the colorful freedom of the Holy Spirit! There will be open space to create in the prayer and worship filled atmosphere of the Prayer Room, as well as time to share about the creative process together.
Required Supplies List
Sketchbook — mixed media paper, about 8.5x11” or a bit larger
Kneaded Eraser — a putty-like eraser, sold at most craft stores and online
